Well nothing is free but this
is as close as you can get to it. Vegetable oil that’s been used and
left out back for the trash can be reused as fuel for a diesel engine.
This is true. You could be driving a grease car.
You should save $100 a month depending on how much you drive. I know it
sounds to good to be true but it is being used in all fifty states and
all over the world. There’s six billion gallons of waste vegetable oil
( WVO ) tossed out behind restaurants every year. Think of the trips
you could take if yo didn’t have the huge expense of fuel. Would you
like to help the environment? Well this can be an answer. WVO can lower
greenhouse emissions by 100% greatly reducing air pollution and it is
carbon neutral. When you burn vegetable oil, the gas contains carbon
dioxide, but it’s the same carbon dioxide…that was absorbed by the
plant while it was growing.

These are little changes that make things better for people—not just
the impact the car will have, but the impact on people who see the car.
Whether we drive or not, maybe we can all help to make those changes.
Greasers, as driver- evangelists are sometimes called, collect and
filter used cooking oil
from restaurants, and add it to the newly installed 15-gallon grease
tank. Most greasers have no problem arranging for the free oil, as
restaurants normally pay a rendering company to remove the waste.

The Greasecar conversion works by working in tandem with the
original diesel tank; after starting the engine with diesel, heat
exchangers warm the veggie oil to a low simmer,
allowing it to start fueling the engine. At that point, the diesel
supply is shut off, and the car is running on grease. In the beginning,
it was environmentalists and hippies, but now we’re seeing a different
kind of clientele.

Greasecar’s biggest opportunity for growth is probably in commercial
sales. Pfizer, the pharmaceutical company, converted a delivery truck
to run on vegetable oil collected from their own cafeteria, garnering
savings as well as local green bennies. Fred Carter, a Grease car
technical service rep – and proud Greaser himself – says the company is
selling 40 to 60 of the kits every month, and is steadily increasing
sales, thanks to the dual effect of gas prices and to a lesser extent,
the Iraq war. Grease mileage average the same as when the vehicle ran
of pure diesel.

The conversion of the engine will be around 800 to 15,000 depending where you look and what kind of system you choose. On a large commercial truck it could cost around 3,500 to 4,000 to change over. There will be a fuel tank included in this price. The need for another fuel tank will be that there is a heating element needed inside the tank. This heats up the veggie oil to a temperature that will run through the injection system. Plus it has to be a certain temperature to burn correctly or you wll damage the engine. They will put a filter system on with a series of toggle switches . This will give the grease car owner a choice of which fuels can be used. Diesel or veggie oil.
You go to the corner and buy diesel for 3.00 a gallon or you go to the same corner, hopefully and get some waste cooking oil ( WVO ) from the foodery for free. Now this isn’t always the case. Hopefully you can have a place in the neighborhood to get your WVO but you may also have to travel a ways to pick it up. This cost time and money. If you are lucky enough to have a regular supply of WVO in a area. Then you are almost there. This all has to be processed so you will have to set up your lab. Now this is fairly inexpensive. But you will need a place to do it. The garage is plenty of room.
Now you have to realize that this is not for everybody. Mom is not going to go through all this just to go to the store and back a couple times a week. There are places where you can pull in and gas up or veggie up. But thats not going to happen without a lot of luck. These people are not on every corner or city for that matter. To get involved with selling to the public there would be some state and federal regulations, which will raise the price of the fuel.
There is somewhere between 100 million and 120 million gallons of WVO generated annually. American drivers need 140 billion gallons of fuel each year. So you see one problem there. Not your problem at the moment but a problem if everybody wanted to switch over to WVO. If you throw new vegetable oil in the mix you still have a major scarcity problem. I don’t think this problem will stop the forward progress of diesel engines running on veggie (Grease car). With oil steadily rising there will be a profit to be made on veggie and the fuel will get processed by some enterprising person. Theres still not enough WVO to go around is everybody jumped on the band wagon but its a start to the solution of dependency on fossil fuel. There will be solar power, hydrogen power, air power, water power etc: coming out of the woodwork in the coming years. Its already happening for example the tata car in Europe.

I’m not discouraged from WVO running a grease car. I’m in the process of putting a school bus together to travel the country. It will be on WVO. If there was 100′s of millions of people doing this I would not be doing it. I wouldn’t see the value. The environment might get a shot in the arm which is good but I would be paying the same 3.00 or 4.00 dollars a gallon for fuel. This is the only way I am going to afford a motor home in my lifetime and travel the country.

It could take months or years to get back in black. I should get my investment back within 6 months just because I haven’t hit the road yet in my ( school bus conversion to RV ). Ive had a few stumbling blocks as far as designing the inside. The engine runs great. We did have a fuel pump problem but we were warned of that when we decided to DYI. The viscosity is to high for the pump.

We will be putting 500 miles a week for the first 2 weeks and after that we will put about 200 if that. We are expecting the cost to be around 50 dollars for every 500 miles and that’s on the high side. You will pay a third of the price for your fuel processing your own fuel. Keep in mind there is some work involved and you will have to put a tank or two underneath the bus body. We will have two. We will have a small processing plant built on the bus under the body, on top, or inside. We are working on that. Cant wait to smell the frence fries while traveling down the road.

Hopefully our grease car will be on the road in 3 months. It is a time consuming project but its so much fun.

Bio diesel fuels (made from plant or animal fats and some form of alcohol) are used by many localities, to run trucks or buses. But vegetable oil has some legal barriers. Vegetable oil has to be certified by the federal government for use as a motor oil. Certification is required by the Environmental Protection Agency for any engine systems modified to use vegetable oil. To date, no vegetable oil conversion has achieved EPA certification. So when you change your bus into a grease car you are illegally tampering with your emissions system.

Now I don’t think this is going to stop me from buying one of the conversion kits on the market and switching from petro to veggie but the city, county, state metro transportation and utilities will have to deal federal legal barriers and red tape. Thats a big discouragement. When vegetable oil and engine conversion are both certified by the federal government. localities can pursue the changing from petro to grease car. Now here is some news I was suspicious about. According to a Department of Energy There is a study showing that vegetable oil actually reduces the life of engines and can damage catalytic converters and filter traps. Well everything I have studied says just the reverse. Sure you can damage your engine and filter traps if you don’t make the right modifications. When the feds don’t have their hand in the till you will not get a positive response from them. Just my thoughts. I’m always suspicious of the governments surveys.

You will have to decide if a grease car is going against the way of government. I for one support the government on lots of things but their non interest in this subject Makes me move forward on it.

Lets talk about the diesel engine and what happens when fuel is run through it. You might want to run diesel fuel in your diesel engine or you might choose a vegetable oil or fat to run through it. Running WVO or SVO is what we call a grease car. Your fuel runs through the injector system which is designed to deliver and properly atomize diesel fuel. Atomization is conversion of bulk liquid into a spray or mist (i.e. collection of drops), often by passing the liquid through a nozzle. When running SVO or WVO through the injectors the viscosity has to be lowered in order not to damage to engine. Diesel fuel has the viscosity of around 8 centistokes. WVO or SVO has a much larger viscosity of 10 to 20 time more. You are trying to run that through an injector spray jet made for fuel with the viscosity of 8. Now this will create an improper spray pattern and cause damage to the engine. Your fuel will not have a proper combustion when the spray pattern is wrong. You will have to lower the viscosity down.

The other issue which needs to be dealt with is the polymerization of vegetable oil when it contacts metal below an optimum temperature. Imagine placing a skillet on the stove, pouring a small amount of vegetable oil in the skillet, and turning the heat to high. The skillet will begin to heat up and as it does it will heat the oil, around 300F the oil will start to smoke, then turn black, stick to the skillet, and destroy it. With another skillet on your stove, turn the heat on high again. When the Skillet gets to about 600F throw a tablespoon of oil in the Skillet, You will notice that the oil is skittering around the skillet on a layer of vapor, none of the oil is sticking to the skillet and none of it is turning to carbon. This same principle applies inside the combustion chamber of your engine, so injecting oil at any temperature into a combustion which is not at operating temperature will result in carbonaceous deposits being formed on the piston crown and cylinder walls again destroying your engine.

So when you are setting up a diesel engine to run as a grease car you will have these two major obstacles mentioned above. You can run vegetable oil without changing a thing and it will probably work but in time the engine will be damaged . So just keep these two things in mind.
1) The vegetable oil must be heated to at least 160F before being injected so that it can be atomized properly by the injectors.
2) The engine must be at operating temperature before any oil is injected.

I’m not saying we will run out of petro. We could or will one day. Petro oil based fuel is going to be priced out of reach to make a normal commute to work non cost effective. I am always writing about alternative fuels and the vehicles that use them such as a grease car, diesel engine, bio diesel, SVO, WVO, etc:. Vegetable oil discarded from a restaurant and used as fuel is regarded as waste vegetable oil (WVO). Straight vegetable oil is (SVO). The diesel engine might just be the engine that does all brute muscle jobs.of the future. There are promising alternative power supplies on the drawing board being tested for implementation but the diesel is here now. Back in the early 1900′s a man by the name of Rudolph Diesel invented an engine that could run on any type of oil or grease. Petroleum oil, peanut oil, canola oil. Not only was his engine versatile, but many of his original prototypes are still in operation today, almost a hundred years later. That’s a diesel for you. This engine will go and go and go. The diesel can easily run half a million miles and truckers talk about a million miles all the time. This will be with the proper maintenance I’m sure. Now not all diesels are the same or made for the same purpose. The engine I’m most interested in will run on bio diesel fuel. This will be the power supply for my grease car.
DeltaHawk Engines, a small Wisconsin company, is developing a family of lightweight, V-4, two-stroke, turbo- and super-charged diesel engines for a variety of general aviation and non-aviation uses. The engines will run on Jet A (JP5) fuel, or #2 diesel where ambient temperatures are high enough to avoid gelling (above 20° F).
This is a major innovation. We are seeing the different uses for this 100+ year invention in all fields. Ive been looking for an answer on running SVO on my small implements such as my chainsaw, mower, weed-whip ETC. All I hear is go electric. I will research this further. This is what is clear to me. I can run my vehicle on WVO and it will cost 1/4 of the price of petro oil based fuel. The engine of today was not designed for running off of WVO. The engine of today is designed for petro based fuel. I can modify the engine to run on WVO, SVO or I can modify the vegetable oil without modifying the engine. The viscosity of vegetable oil must be lowered to allow for proper atomization of fuel, otherwise incomplete combustion and carbon build up will ultimately damage the engine. The least expensive route here is to collect WVO and modify it to run the diesel engine without modifying the engine. There will be up front costs setting up your processing plant. There will aways be a need to replenish your storage supply of WVO and there will be time involved in processing it.

I am changing my bus into a grease car and I am going to use the WVO process and not change the diesel engine. I have the room for the processing plant in the barn and it doesn’t take a lot of room. What I understand is that I can run my bus with WVO for at least another 300,000 miles at around .50 cents, on the high side 1 dollar a gallon. We will see how true that is.

Frederick Carter
Semi retired at 50 yrs old and I’m fascinated with new sources of energy and am always working on new projects. The grease car is one dear to my heart. My school bus conversion is on track.

The fuel you see after this process will run a grease car. There will be a 24 hour waiting period after we mix this but the final product will be fuel. You will see the color and viscosity to give you a visual of the final product.

Lye absorbs water from the air which will interfere with the chemical process so be swift when measuring your lye. Weigh your lye in a Ziploc plastic bag. Have the bag on the scale and when done roll out the air and zip it tight.

You will be using 3.5 grams of lye. NaOH must be 97% pure. If you use KOH then use 5.5grams for 90% pure and 5.8 grams for 85% pure.

Now we are going to mix the methanol using the safest method possible. Measure out 200 ml of methanol and pour it into the half-litre HDPE container using a funnel. Be a bit swift due to methanol also absorbs water from the air. Cap the container immediately. Carefully add the lye to the HDPE container using the second funnel. Replace the bung and cap it.

What we are doing here is forming sodium methoxide. You will swirl this mixture around for a bit so the lye will dissolve. There will be a bit of heat on the container from the chemical reaction. You will see when all the lye is dissolved. The liquid will be clear. You want all the lye to be dissolved so be patient. With Naoh it can take 30 min. to over nite. Using KOH you will not have a long crystal dissolving rate. 10 minutes probably.

The blender you use will become non workable after doing this four or 5 times so get a cheap second hand one. Make sure the seals are tight. It must be very dry if you just washed it.

Preheat the cooking oil to 130F and pour into the blender. Pour the methoxide into the oil. Lid the blender and run on slow for 25 mins.

Pour the mixture into the 2 litre PET bottle for settling and tighten the lid. The bottle will contract as the mixture cools down so let some air into it after a bit. let it sit to settle for 24 hours. You will see a yellowish liquid after 24 hours and that is grease car fuel.
